About
Iona Dutz is a freelance photographer based in Leipzig. Her work spans editorial and portrait photography, including commissions for Die Zeit, Der Spiegel, and The New York Times, as well as independent projects. She studied photography under Prof. Wiebke Loeper (BA) and Prof. Stephanie Kiwitt (MA).
Alongside her commissioned work, Dutz’s independent practice is driven by a desire to contribute to contemporary social discourses. Photography becomes a space for reflection, with change as a central motif: how can processes of transformation be made visible in people, environments, and situations? The encounter lies at the core of her practice. By stepping back and consciously slowing down – at times through analogue photography and material constraints – Dutz creates space for what is essential to emerge. Within this process, those portrayed appear through her subjective gaze, shaped by close attention to atmosphere, light, and the shared moment of exchange, through which photography becomes a means of sustained dialogue rather than mere representation.
