About
I’m Iona Dutz, a female freelance portrait and documentary photographer based in Leipzig, Germany. My work spans a wide range of genres, including editorial and corporate photography, as well as personal documentary projects that evolve into book and exhibition formats. Inspired by the people and the light in front of my camera, I strive to create images that are both timeless and deeply human.
Born in 1986 in Rostock, my personal projects reflect my connection to East Germany. I focus particularly on exploring the experiences of youth in rural Saxony and the social and cultural transformations in the region since reunification. Through these projects, I aim to document the resilience, challenges, and stories that shape this unique part of Germany.
My journey into photography began in 2007 with an apprenticeship as a photographer in Leipzig. My academic path continued with a Bachelor of Arts at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences (2011-2016), where I completed my photographic thesis ‘The Portrait as a Document of Time’ under Prof Wiebke Loeper. I am currently broadening my artistic horizons in the Master's programme Visual Strategies and Stories at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle under Prof. Stephanie Kiwitt.
Through my lens, I aim to craft images that document, interpret, and celebrate the world around us. Let’s create something meaningful together.
